"It is rewarding when I hear about students using what they learned in my class in their daily life and know that what I’m teaching matters to someone."

Why did you become a Japanese teacher?

I lived overseas as a child and loved meeting people from different cultures and learning new languages. That experience made me decide to become a language teacher. Learning different languages also made me want to know more about the Japanese language. Each language is unique and we can also learn history and culture through its language. I think language learning is fun so I became a Japanese teacher to share this fun experience.

What do you like about teaching Japanese?

I like teaching because I keep learning something new by preparing for my lessons, but what I love the most is when I see my students enjoying learning. Studying kanji could be challenging but I feel very happy when my students find kanji interesting and think it is actually fun to learn it. It is also rewarding when I hear about students using what they learned in their daily life and know that what I’m teaching matters to someone.

How are your lessons?

I am passionate about studying the relationship between language and culture. I hope my students find some interesting aspects of the Japanese language through my lesson. My approach is to incorporate the student’s interests and needs. In Japan Switch, my focus is speaking/conversation. I want my students to feel confident talking to people in their communities and workplace.

What are your hobbies?

I’m a member of a local orchestra where I play the oboe. I love reading and my favorite author is Keiichiro Hirano. I love watching all sorts of movies. I used to put scuba diving as my hobby but I haven’t done it for a long time. Now, I enjoy walking and yoga. I also like listening to podcasts while I’m driving.
